Church History

History of Our Church

Faith Lutheran Church, founded in 1967, has a rich history. June 25, 1967 was the first service held, with 260 people attending.  Faith was built through the efforts of the "Mission Founder's Program" of the American Lutheran Church, with St. Paul Lutheran Church, Dearborn, MI as its sponsoring organization.  St. Paul provided the resources needed to secure the current property, construct the church building and a down payment on a parsonage.  In addition to this, a gift of money was given by St. Paul for additional expenses the new church would incur.  A dedication service was held in November 1967, and the new church began with 157 baptized members and 97 confirmed members.

Pr. E. David Spencer was the church's first minister serving from 1967 - 1972.  Pr. Bruce Kjellberg served from 1973 - 1980, followed by Pr. Darwin Wilson from 1981 - 1991.  From 1992 - 2005, Pr. Melvin "Bud" Miller served at Faith.  Pr Jamey B. Authier began serving 2008 - current day.

Faith celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 1992, and was blessed once again to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2007.

Faith Lutheran Church's ministries continue to serve the congregation and the larger community.  There are a wide variety of ministry opportunities for all ages and interests.  Join us as we work together to share Christ's love.

History of the ELCA

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was formed over 20 years ago. This new church was formed from three separate and well-established North American church bodies:

  • The American Lutheran Church
  • The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and
  • The Lutheran Church in America.

Beginning January 1, 1988, these churches, with shared beliefs and missions, officially formed the ELCA. Two decades later, this energized church is composed of 4.8 million members and nearly 10,500 congregations across the U.S. and Caribbean. Today, the ELCA reflects the rich and diverse heritage of the people it serves.

But to understand our heritage fully, one must trace our roots back through the mid-17th century, when early Lutherans came to America from Europe, settling in the Virgin Islands and the area that is now known as New York. Even before that, Martin Luther sought reform for the church in the 16th century, laying the framework for our beliefs.
